Ytterbium (Yb): Uses, Supply and Investment Guide

Ytterbium is a heavy rare earth used in high-power fiber lasers for industrial cutting and welding. Ytterbium is also used in some of the most precise atomic clocks and as the starting material for producing the medical isotope lutetium-177.

Ytterbium Price

There is no public benchmark for ytterbium; it trades in small volumes.

For the rare earths that do have public price series, see the rare earth price charts, and how rare earth pricing works for why most rare earths have no transparent benchmark.

What Is Ytterbium Used For?

Where Does Ytterbium Come From?

Ytterbium is a minor heavy rare earth separated mainly in China. Enriched ytterbium isotopes for medical use come from specialist isotope producers.

China export controls on ytterbium

China announced export controls on this element in October 2025, together with holmium, erbium, thulium, europium and ytterbium, then suspended them. The suspension runs to at least 10 November 2026; the US says it has been extended to 10 January 2027, but China has not published matching text.

How to Invest in Ytterbium

Ytterbium has no dedicated investment vehicle. Laser manufacturers use it, but it is a small part of their costs, and it is a minor by-product for separators.

Ytterbium FAQ

What is ytterbium used for?

Ytterbium is used mainly in ytterbium-doped fiber lasers for industrial cutting and welding. It is also used in atomic clocks and to produce the medical isotope lutetium-177.

How is ytterbium used in medicine?

Ytterbium is used in medicine as a target material: enriched ytterbium-176 is irradiated in reactors to produce lutetium-177, a radioisotope used in cancer therapy.

Does China control ytterbium exports?

China announced export controls on ytterbium in October 2025 and then suspended them. The suspension runs to at least 10 November 2026; the US says it has been extended to January 2027.
