The 17 Rare Earth Elements

The 17 rare earth elements are scandium, yttrium and the 15 lanthanides from lanthanum to lutetium. Each element below links to its own guide covering uses, supply, pricing and investment exposure. Elements marked Magnet are the four used in NdFeB permanent magnets.

Scandium and Yttrium

Not lanthanides, but classed as rare earths because they occur in the same ores and behave alike chemically.

Light Rare Earths (LREE)

The more abundant lanthanides, led by the magnet pair neodymium and praseodymium.

Heavy Rare Earths (HREE)

Scarcer lanthanides with concentrated supply, including the magnet additives dysprosium and terbium.
